Huawei launches debut mobile devices
Huawei launches debut mobile devices
Tuesday, October 13, 2009 9:36 PM
Established in 1988 by Ren Zhengfei, Huawei specializes in research and development (R&D), production and marketing of communications equipment, and in providing customized network solutions for telecom carriers.
I was recently invited by Huawei on my second trip to visit the company's headquarters in Longgang district in Shenzhen, Guangdong, along with two Indonesian journalists. Our questions and observations concentrated on the company's device portfolio, under a new division managed by Huawei Device (aka Huawei Communications), a subsidiary of Huawei Technologies.
Huawei Device provides a diverse range of end-user devices, including handsets (UMTS, GSM, CDMA,TD-SCDMA), mobile broadband devices (USB modems, wireless modems, data cards), home solutions (fixed wireless terminals, wireless gateways) and video conferencing products. Among the division's customers are T-Mobile, Vodafone, TATA, China Telecom, British Telecom and Telefonica.
Glory Cheung, spokesperson for Huawei Device, told us the new division is already on the right track. According to statistics that she showed us, in 2008 the division's sales revenue was US$4 billion and it shipped 80 million units. ABI Research revealed that, in the same year, Huawei's mobile broadband's global market share was more than 55 percent.
Huawei rocked the world when it showed its Android device at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February. T-Mobile recently unveiled the "Huawei Android" T-Mobile Pulse, which will be launched in October 2009 and will cost *179.99 ($290) on a pay-as-you-go contract.
The Pulse provides one-touch access to the web, and comes pre-installed with some of the most popular services from Google as well as the Android Marketplace. The black polished chrome smartphone is powered by Qualcomm's MSM7200A chipset and weighs just 130 grams.
It features a trackball and a full touch-screen 3.5-inch HVGA display with auto-rotates. The Pulse also features a 3.2 megapixel, auto-focus camera, a 2 GB internal memory and a micro SD card slot. The handset also offers access to corporate email through the Road sync client.
I had this smartphone in my hand at P&T/Wireless & Nertwork Comm China 2009 in Beijing on Thursday and was impressed by its touchscreen capability and applications.
Meanwhile, in the mobile broadband area, Huawei recently announced that the company has now shipped more than 60 million mobile broadband units (including data cards, dongles and embedded modules), across more than 133 countries.
"This milestone highlights Huawei's deep understanding of the operator business," Cheung said.
In February 2008, Huawei launched the E510, the world's first terminal to support mobile TV services, and the D100, a router gadget. In June, Huawei launched the E180, the world's first slim mobile broadband terminal. This year, Huawei introduced the world's slimmest wireless modem, E5 and the E182E, the world's first HSPA+ mobile broadband.
Just like T-Mobile Pulse, Huawei has always delivered its handsets to the market by co-branding with operators (in Indonesia, with Bakrie Telecom for CDMA handsets and Telkomsel for mobile modems, for instance).
The next logical question is whether this Chinese private company will enter the consumer market by offering their handsets with the Huawei brand?
"No," Ross Gan, Huawei head of corporate communications, told The Jakarta Post. "Our vision is clear: having close partnerships with operators and creating value by increasing ARPU for operators through innovation."
Besides, Gan added, to enter the consumer market, Huawei would need large distribution channels and a strong brand for consumers' minds.
"If Huawei chose this track, it would be hard for us to compete with big brands like Nokia or Samsung," Gan said.
So, he added, "We don't want to sweat in those areas, so we will keep maintaining our co-branding strategy in delivering handsets as well as mobile broadband devices."
It's a good reason and makes good sense.

RI to help integrate East Asia: Japan FM
RI to help integrate East Asia: Japan FM
Jakarta | Tue, 10/13/2009 9:13 PM | World
Japan will involve Indonesia in its bid to realize the East Asia Community that will bring it closer to its major rivals China and South Korea. After a meeting with his Indonesian counterpart Hassan Wirajuda, visiting Japanese Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada said Tokyo would like to discuss further the concept of the East Asia Community with Jakarta, which he said “has boasted mature democracy and firm economy in the recent years”.
“Indonesia is an important partner for Japan in effort to bring about integration in East Asia. Indonesia plays an important role in ASEAN. Japan would like to have a dialogue with Indonesia about the details of establishing the East Asian Community,” Okada said through an interpreter.
ASEAN leaders have managed to bring Japan, China and South Korea under one umbrella – the ASEAN+3 – after decades of prolonged historic hostilities among the three. The new concept of an East Asian Community, launched under the month-old government of Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama, has drawn mixed responses, with critics saying it would rival similar regional groupings such as ASEAN.

It's not lunacy, probes find water in moon dirt
By SETH BORENSTEIN, AP Science Writer Seth Borenstein, Ap Science Writer
–
Wed Sep 23, 5:42 pm ET
WASHINGTON – The moon isn't the dry dull place it seems. Traces of water lurk in the dirt unseen.
Three different space probes
found the chemical signature of water all over the moon's surface,
surprising the scientists who at first doubted the unexpected
measurement until it was confirmed independently and repeatedly.
It's not enough moisture to foster homegrown life on the moon. But if processed in mass quantities, it might provide resources — drinking water and rocket fuel — for future moon-dwellers, scientists say. The water comes and goes during the lunar day.
It's
not a lot of water. If you took a two-liter soda bottle of lunar dirt,
there would probably be a medicine dropperful of water in it, said University of Maryland astronomer
Jessica Sunshine, one of the scientists who discovered the water.
Another way to think of it is if you want a drink of water, it would
take a baseball diamond's worth of dirt, said team leader Carle Pieters
of Brown University.
"It's sort of just
sticking on the surface," Sunshine said. "We always think of the moon
as dead and this is sort of a dynamic process that's going on."
The
discovery, with three studies bring published in the journal Science on
Thursday and a NASA briefing, could refocus interest in the moon. The
appeal of the moon waned after astronauts visited 40 years ago and
called it "magnificent desolation."
The announcement comes two weeks before a NASA probe purposely smashes near the moon's south pole
to see if it can kick up buried ice. Over the last decade, astronomers
have found some signs of underground ice on the moon's poles. But this
latest discovery is quite different. It finds unexpected and pervasive
water clinging to the surface of soil, not absorbed into it.
"It is drier than any desert we have here," Sunshine said.
The
water was spotted by spacecraft that either circled the moon or flew
by. All three ships used the same type of instrument that looked at the
absorption of a specific wavelength of light that is the chemical
signature of only two molecules: water and hydroxyl. Hydroxyl is one
atom of hydrogen with one atom of oxygen, instead of two hydrogen atoms in water.
Because
of the timing during the daylight when some of that wavelength
disappears and some doesn't, it shows that both hydroxyl and water are
present, Sunshine said.
This light wavelength
was first discovered by an instrument on the Indian lunar satellite
Chandrayaan-1, which stopped operating last month. Scientists initially
figured something was wrong with the instrument because everyone knew
the moon did not have a drop of water on the surface, Pieters said.
"We
argued literally for months amongst ourselves to find out where the
problem was," Pieters said. Sunshine, who was on the team, had a
similar instrument on NASA's Deep Impact probe, headed for a comet but swinging by the moon in June. So Deep Impact looked for the water-hydroxyl signature — and found it.
Scientists
also looked back at the records of NASA's Cassini probe, which is
circling Saturn. It has the same type instrument and whizzed by the
moon ten years ago. Sure enough, it had found the same thing.
The
chance that three different instruments malfunctioned in the same way
on three different spaceships is almost zilch, so this confirms that
it's water and hydroxyl, Pieters said.
"There's just no question that it's there," Pieters said. "It's unequivocal."
Scientists
testing lunar samples returned to Earth by astronauts did find traces
of water, but they had figured it was contamination from moisture in
Earth air, Pieters said.
Three scientists who
were not part of the team of discoverers said the conclusion makes
sense, with Arizona State University's Ron Greeley using the same word
as Pieters: unequivocal.
Lunar and Planetary Institute senior scientist Paul Spudis called it exciting and said it raises the logical question: Where did that water come from?
Pieters figures there are three possibilities: It came from comets or
asteroids that crashed into the moon, those crashes freed up trapped
water from below the surface, or the solar wind carries hydrogen atoms that binds with oxygen in the dirt. That final possibility is the one that Sunshine and Pieters both prefer.
If it is the solar wind, that also means that other places without
atmosphere in our solar system, such as Mercury or asteroids, can also
have bits of water, Sunshine said.
